Electrical installations for garden rooms
A garden-room electrical installation needs to suit the supply, cable route, room use and equipment. Lighting, sockets, heating, air conditioning and workshop equipment can create different demands; a survey and electrical design establish what is appropriate.
Use the correct standard and dates
BS 7671 Amendment 3 was issued in 2024. IET and BSI published BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 on 15 April 2026, with a six-month transition before the previous version is withdrawn on 15 October 2026. The applicable requirements should be confirmed for the design, installation and inspection being undertaken.
What the design needs to consider
The electrician assesses the existing supply, load, cable protection, voltage drop, earthing arrangement, protective devices and isolation. Steel wire armoured cable may be suitable for the route, but selecting a cable by appearance or by building area alone is not enough. Outdoor equipment and penetrations also need appropriate protection and detailing.
Inspection and certification
Ask for the installation certificate and any required building-regulations notification. Part P and the competent-person notification route are separate from the edition number printed on an electrical standard. An older installation does not automatically become unsafe merely because a new amendment is published; its condition and safety should be assessed by a competent electrician.
Plan around your building
Tell TRJ which appliances and equipment you expect to use. Agree sockets, lighting, data cabling and heating controls before finishing the interior. Keep the final certification with your project documents.
