01 / A CLOSER LOOK
Western Red Cedar
Cedar offers a natural timber appearance and a distinctive grain. Board direction, fixings and detailing influence the finished elevation. Untreated timber changes colour as it weathers; discuss any coating and maintenance preference before choosing the finish.
02 / A CLOSER LOOK
Thermowood
Thermally modified timber is another option for a warm, contemporary elevation. Allow for correct ventilation, fixings, clearances and manufacturer guidance. A timber finish does not replace the insulation performance of the SIP building envelope.

Render and K-render finishes
Render offers a different texture and colour palette from timber. It must be installed as a compatible system over an approved substrate, with appropriate joints and weather details. The original page includes K-render and silicone-render options; system suitability matters more than the label alone.
04 / A CLOSER LOOK
Cedral fibre-cement boards
Cedral provides a boarded finish with manufacturer-specified installation and maintenance requirements. It still needs periodic inspection and cleaning. Cladding choice, the complete wall build-up and distance from boundaries must be considered together where fire requirements apply.

BEFORE YOU START
Your questions, answered.
Specific answers to help you develop the brief.
Which cladding requires the least maintenance?
Maintenance varies by material, exposure and coating. Fibre cement and render still need inspection and cleaning; timber appearance changes over time unless managed with an appropriate finish.
Can different elevations use different finishes?
Yes, subject to compatible detailing, the specification and relevant site requirements.
Does cladding provide the main insulation?
The insulated building envelope provides the main thermal performance. Exterior cladding is one part of the complete weather-protected wall system.
