A garden office.
A place to focus.

A compact SIP office with cedar frontage, garden-facing glazing and air conditioning.

Costi and the TRJ team built Daniel’s garden office at the end of his garden in Bury St Edmunds. The 4 m × 2.5 m building combines a warm timber frontage with dark glazing and a rendered side elevation, creating a separate space for working from home.

01 / THE BRIEF

Work close to home.
Step away from the house.

Daniel wanted a dedicated garden office. The compact footprint fits at the end of the lawn, while the glazed entrance looks back towards the garden and house.

The agreed finish pairs Western Red Cedar across the front with a rendered right-hand elevation. Anthracite external frames and black roof trim define the edges without competing with the garden setting.

Inside, the specification provides a simple open room with white walls, laminate flooring, power, lighting and an internet connection. A Wi-Fi-enabled LG air-conditioning unit was included for control of the room’s temperature.

02 / ORIGINAL FLOOR PLAN

A compact footprint.
An open working space.

The original dimensioned drawing shows the office at 4,000 mm × 2,500 mm externally, with an internal space labelled 3,650 mm × 2,150 mm.

One open room

The plan leaves the office as a single clear space, ready for a desk and storage chosen around the customer’s working routine.

A glazed garden entrance

The frontage combines 1,600 mm French doors with an 800 mm fixed glazed panel. The order specifies an overall frame height of 2,030 mm, with anthracite outside and white inside.

03 / SPECIFICATION & DETAILS

Simple finishes.
Practical everyday details.

The signed specification sets out the structure, glazing, finishes and electrical installation. The photographs follow the build from its SIP shell through plastering and the exterior finish.

The white interior and garden-facing glazing keep the room light. The later fit-out photograph shows the wall-mounted air-conditioning unit installed.

SIP structure and foundations

The base, walls and roof are built from structural insulated panels. The order specifies screw-pile foundations at a standard depth of 1,250 mm.

Cedar, render and roof edge

Western Red Cedar finishes the front, with render on the right-hand side. The back and left-hand side were specified in cement-particle board. A membrane, battens and wall ventilation form part of the external wall arrangement.

French doors and fixed glazing

A 1,600 mm set of uPVC French doors sits beside an 800 mm fixed frame. Both are specified at 2,030 mm high, with grey anthracite outside and white inside.

Interior finishes

The agreed interior comprises plasterboard, skimming and white Dulux paint, with Howdens laminate flooring and white skirting. The gallery includes the interior during plastering and the final fit-out.

Power, lighting and internet

The specification includes an independent consumer unit with RCBO and surge protection, four double sockets, six internal downlights and three exterior downlights. Internet cabling and connection were also included.

Air conditioning and rainwater

A 2.5 kW Wi-Fi-enabled LG Standard Plus air-conditioning unit was specified. A black round gutter and downpipe manage roof rainwater, with the order locating the discharge behind the building.
